Home Instruction
Evidence of Progress Requirement for the 2020-2021 School Year
In accordance with § 22.1-254.1 (C) of the Code of Virginia, parents providing home instruction for the 2020-2021 school year must provide evidence of academic progress to their local school division by August 1, 2021. Although this requirement was waived for the 2019-2020 school year due to COVID-19, the evidence of progress requirement has not been waived and is required for the 2020-2021 school year.
The 1993 General Assembly of Virginia amended Section 22.1.254 of the Code to exempt children who are under the age of six as of September 30th of the year from the testing requirements. It should also be noted that students completing their 12th grade curriculum are exempt from assessment.
Intent to provide home instruction
A parent who elects home instruction must notify the school division superintendent no later than August 15 of the intent to do so for the coming school year, provide a list of the subjects to be studied for the coming year, and provide evidence of having met one of the criteria described in § 22.1-254.1.A of the Code of Virginia for providing home instruction. The notice of intent to provide home instruction may be in the form of a letter or other written documentation and must identify the child or children involved. VDOE has developed a model form, the Notice of Intent to Provide Home Instruction. Parents may use this form to provide notice to the school division.
Pre-K PROGRAM
In the fall of 2014, Rappahannock County Public Schools, under the Virginia Preschool Initiative (VPI), started a Pre-K program for 4-year old county students within our elementary school. This program was a collaborative effort with Skyline Head Start (3 and 4-year olds) and focused on addressing cognitive, social-emotional and physical development as mutually supportive areas that require active attention in the pre-school years. As of August of 2018, Head Start is no longer offering services in Rappahannock County. However, if you have a child in the 3 to 4 year old age range and are interested in participating in the Pre-K program, please call Michelle Berta at 540.227.0023, extension 3210 for more information. Our Pre-K application form can be found on this site under "Forms." Applications for the next school year are due in the Office of the School Board by May 1st. Parents will be notified of acceptance by mail before the end of the school year.
NOTICE: Please send completed applications with required documents to the School Board Office as soon as possible after January 2 to ensure you are in the pool for the upcoming school year. Limited number of slots are available. Applications can be found under the forms tab. They are also available at the School Board Office.
