Rappahannock Students Rock National Spanish Exam
Every year, the National Spanish Exams are given online to students who are eligible to take them. The Exams are national standardized assessment tools for grades 6 – 12 to measure proficiency and achievement in Spanish levels 10– 6. They are the most widely used tests of Spanish in the United States and are given by over 3,800 teachers nationwide. Rappahannock County High School participated in the exams in the spring of 2014.
The results were impressive. Competing against top schools in the country—as well as, esteemed Virginia schools such as: Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (ranked by U.S. News and World Report as the number one high school in Virginia); Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School; Woodberry Forest; and Randolph-Macon Academy—Rappahannock students more than held their own.
Freshman, Cristina Arellano, competed at the bilingual level in Spanish Level 1. She finished first in the state. Mahlet Yonas-Yirgu also won a gold medal in Level 1. Julia Wood scored a gold medal in Level 2. Kelsie Strobel and Ellie Young received silver for Level 1. Brittany Adams scored a bronze for Level 1. Julia Estes, Destiny Waag, Mikayla Zook and John Massie all received honorable mentions for Level 1. Stephany Baldwin, Madelynn Heneghan and Emily Massie received honorable mentions for Level 3. The students’ results from the test were remarkable.
Congratulations Rapp Students!
